Since The Mandalorian Season 2 ended with the shocking return of Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (CGI Mark Hamill) to the Star wars story, fans are clamoring for more of the iconic character and his new Padawan, Grogu (AKA “Baby Yoda”).

The cast of Skywalker, however, poses a problem given the timeline of The Mandalorian saga. It takes place during the time of the original trilogy, roughly five years after the George Lucas film. Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi (1983).

Mark Hamill, 70, has been playing the legendary Jedi since 1977, and although aging technology could be used successfully for a scene or two, as was the case for Princess Leia (CGI Carrie Fisher) in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) – it is not sustainable in the long term.

Many have suggested that Marvel Cinematic Universe star Sebastian Stan could take on the role of Skywalker for future endeavors, as he looks suspiciously like Hamill in his youth. Although both actors have raised the possibility at various times, no official casting announcement has been made by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy or any other executive.

Now, Star wars fans have what they think is an even better idea of how to fit Luke Skywalker and Grogu’s Jedi Academy story into the Star wars franchise – they want it lively.

This is, in fact, an incredibly viable idea given that Star wars animation is the wheelhouse of Lucasfilm Creative Director Dave Filoni. Filoni, considered by many fans to be the savior of Star wars (next to it, of course, Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau), is responsible for helping George Lucas develop characters like Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and for series like Star Wars Rebels and, more recently, Clone wars spin off Star Wars: The Wrong Lot.

The conversation within the fan community started on Reddit, where one user asked:

Redditor u / MacGuffinGuy loves the idea, believing it could set up Ben Solo’s time at the Academy before he burns him down, as evidenced by the famous flashback scene in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017):

At 100% such a series would be perfectly animated as you could have him train Leia and later Ben solo without expensive CGI re-creations or redesigns. This is my greatest desire for Faloni [sic: Filoni] at M

I think that’s what the unannounced animated series “Tales of the Jedi” will be.

It’s important to remember, however, that as of yet, no Luke Skywalker series has been confirmed. Currently, Star wars fans can enjoy new episodes of Mandalorian spin off, Boba Fett’s book, every Wednesday on Disney +.
